Book Broadcast is a post I have created to help ease the load of the books I have for review. It is a great way to spread the word, providing recognition to an author or publisher for sending me a book to review. As my reviewing and blogging duties have stepped up a notch in the last year, I don’t often have the time to complete an in depth review. I hope you can discover some new titles to read through this regular book post.
About My Absolute Darling:
‘You think you’re invincible. You think you won’t ever miss. We need to put the fear on you. You need to surrender yourself to death before you ever begin, and accept your life as a state of grace, and then and only then will you be good enough.’
At 14, Turtle Alveston knows the use of every gun on her wall;
That chaos is coming and only the strong will survive it;
That her daddy loves her more than anything else in this world.
And he’ll do whatever it takes to keep her with him.
She doesn’t know why she feels so different from the other girls at school;
Why the line between love and pain can be so hard to see;
Why making a friend may be the bravest and most terrifying thing she has ever done
And what her daddy will do when he finds out …
Sometimes strength is not the same as courage.
Sometimes leaving is not the only way to escape.
Sometimes surviving isn’t enough.
New writer Gabriel Tallent makes an explosive start to his writing career with his debut novel, My Absolute Darling, which has a few shocks in store for the reader. At the core of this novel is a young and memorable protagonist, fourteen year old Julia “Turtle” Alveston, who is at the mercy of her crazed survivalist father Martin. We quickly learn that Turtle longs to break free from her father’s oppressive clutches. My Absolute Darling is a novel that pushes the boundaries narrative content wise, but at the same time it features some lyrical descriptions of the natural world. I was taken aback by the beauty and refinement of the writing which has come from this debut author. My Absolute Darling is a book unlike any other, it is as unique as it is hard to handle, due to the violent content. I have to admit I have a slight love/loathe relationship with this book. My Absolute Darling is a novel that will challenge and grip you from the first page to the last, as Turtle Alveston navigates the difficult terrain between worshipping and detesting her father. The writing is soulful, gut wrenching and savage at times. My Absolute Darling is an impressive debut novel that easily stands out from the crowd.
My Absolute Darling by Gabriel Tallent was published on 21st August 2017 by Harper Collins Books Australia. Details on how to purchase the book can be found here.
