In the search for sleep, he may have found the woman of his dreams…

Jared Nairn needs a new start and a good night’s rest. After enduring a combat zone, a rocky divorce, and chronic insomnia, the quaint California town of Sanctuary seems like just the place to rebuild. He hopes that an appointment with the local meditation expert will cure his lack of sleep. After duty on the frontline, hypnosis should be a breeze…

Mai Tran has treated her fair share of men without much interest of dropping their defenses. So when a nervous veteran strides into her office, it’s nothing out of the ordinary… except for the instant attraction that seems to be completely mutual. But with someone spreading false rumors about nefarious activity during Mai’s sessions, she’s hesitant to start a relationship with a client. Any potential scandal could break her and bankrupt her practice…

After a meditation track mixup, Jared and Mai can’t help but indulge their more passionate natures. When both of their pasts come back to haunt them, the veteran and the hypnotist must decide just how much they’re willing to risk for love…

California Dreaming is a standalone romantic comedy in the Sanctuary series. If you like sizzling sex scenes, hilarious incidents, and stories with emotional resonance, then you’ll love Evie Snow’s dreamy story.

My review:

Evie Snow’s second book in the Sanctuary series, titled California Dreaming, is a story that boasts an ex army hero, haunted by insomnia, paired against a hypnotherapist dealing with a threat to her professionalism.  California Dreaming is the sizzling tale of this pair, set against an appealing backdrop, with a colourful cast of secondary characters.

Leading the charge in California Dreaming is Jared Nairn, a man with much weight on his shoulders. Following tours of Afghanistan and Iraq, as well as coming home to a messy divorce it is no wonder that Jared is suffering from insomnia. The small town charm of Sanctuary appears to be the perfect place for Jared to recoup. In attempting to cure his sleep issues, Jared pays a visit to a local meditation expert who uses techniques of hypnotherapy to cure her patients. When Mai Tran, the hypnotherapist, first meets army veteran Jared, it seems like his case will be an easy one to take on. But Mai gets much more than she bargains for when the attraction between the two of them becomes quickly undeniable, spurred on by a meditation mix up. Just as things heat up between these two passionate leads, the past catches up with both of them. The question is, with all this past baggage, can Mai and Jared still fall in love?

If you are looking for a book that you can lose yourself in and forget your cares for a few hours, I would suggest California Dreaming. This sweet and sexy story is fast read that I personally devoured in record time! From the opening page, I was drawn to the two main characters, lovingly drawn by Evie Snow. The vivid characterisation and excellent pairing helped draw me further into the pages of this novel.  I have to say it was refreshing to have a hypnotherapist, trained in meditation techniques as the leading lady of the story, what a refreshing occupation for a heroine! It also paves the way for quite the unconventional romance!

Not only is California Dreaming a solid romance tale, beneath the layers of this tale are a number of resounding themes. From the after effects of war for our brave returned soldiers, broken marriages, to defamation of character and client relationships. All these are handled with a deft hand by Evie Snow. These themes are balanced well with an air of tension, along with moments of humour and fun dialogue to match.

What I loved most about California Dreaming was the fresh and breezy US based setting. Snow transported me across the globe, to the wonderful fictional town of Sanctuary. I felt like I was on holiday, without the plane ride! Sanctuary is a picture perfect locale and I loved every moment of my time with the characters based in this town.

I read California Dreaming immediately after the first book in this series, Head over Heels (Sanctuary #1). It is not necessary to read one after the other, but I personally enjoyed this experience. I also appreciated the great little sneak peak into the next instalment in the series. I look forward to exploring more delightful books in this charming series.
